About Us

Midwest Urban Strategies represents a coordinated effort on behalf of 13 Department of Labor urban workforce development boards to marry traditional workforce development practices with economic development.

Through intentional collaboration, leveraging stakeholders and efficient and creative use of resources, our strategy is to retain and grow local talent and generate greater return on investment for our employer partners and the workforce system.

As representatives from urban epicenters, the challenges and opportunities we experience by serving diverse populations – culturally, socially, and economically, require a unique set of strategies and tactics to connect people to the changing expectations and needs of employers.

Our Vision

As representatives from urban epicenters, the challenges and opportunities we experience by serving diverse populations – culturally, socially, and economically, require a unique set of strategies and tactics to connect people to the changing expectations and needs of employers.

Our agenda includes the following four goals.

  1. Creating Regional Sector-based Advisory Boards comprised of business leaders and industry experts
  2. Utilizing vested multi-city organizations, such as the United Way and Boys and Girls Clubs, to create a regional network of service/training providers and deepen community impact and reach
  3. Leveraging the expertise, relationship networks and technical support of National Skills Coalition, National Network of Sector Partners, Jobs for the Future and other nationally recognized research and policy advocacy organizations
  4. Capitalizing on the diversity and opportunity that comes from the scope and size of our urban epicenters, to secure resources, share information, and implement best and tried practice to further fulfill our mission as change agents

Regional Focus

At a time when federal policy and funding is shifting, our efforts are emerging as a scalable, replicable, sustainable model, where the public workforce system is actively impacting economic development through wide-scale project planning and implementation.

We are no longer just the bank, we are engines of workforce innovation. With more than $13 million raised, we are building on our successes to date with a strong vision, strategies for growth, and diverse funding mechanisms.

The goal is to take the micro-successes and strengths of each workforce development board and replicate them on a regional scale. Through intentional industry engagement that puts business in the driver’s seat and connects employers to a well-prepared supply of workers, MIDWEST URBAN STRATEGIES improves effectiveness and efficiency regionally and locally, bolstering the Midwest’s place within the national economy while growing and retaining our homegrown talent and businesses.
